ABOUT THE CLASS
This series is designed for seniors (~50+) with little or no recent
yoga experience, or those who would like to continue their practice at a safe, gentle, sequential
pace designed to improve overall strength, flexibility and balance.
The first two classes will focus on breathing exercises and basic poses (cow/cat, heaven and
earth, half crescent moon, child, neck and shoulder stretches, and savasana), and the next two
will build on these basic poses with additional breathing exercises and introductory back
stretches (forward fold, gentle back bend, and side twists). The use of chairs will be included as
potential modifications during these classes. The fifth and sixth classes will introduce hip flexes,
core strengthening poses (boat, sunbird w/variations, plank, gate, simple lunges) and basic
sequences (sphinx/cobra-down dog-plank-child). The seventh class will introduce some basic
standing poses (mountain, chair, expanding star, warrior 1 and 2, and squat) plus a simplified
moon salutation in preparation for the Spring Equinox and full moon. The eighth class will
introduce additional standing poses (triangle, peaceful warrior) and flows, tying all the classes
together into a simple practice. Classes will be modified based on the needs, abilities and
progress of the class participants.
