Gentle Back Care Class
WITH STEVE SAUNDERS
At Poser YOGA SEQUIM
145 E. Washington St. Sequim, WA
ABOUT THE CLASS
Eight class progressive series on Tuesday at 4:00 (Sequim Studio)
running from February 5 through March 26. This series is designed for students with problematic
or chronically stiff backs, or those continuing students that desire a slower, gentle, sequential
practice. This series is specifically designed to address muscle length and strength imbalances
that affect the spine, decompression of discs, release of chronic tension patterns, and improving
spinal alignment.
The first two classes will focus on the use of breathing exercises to help release and relax the
body and mind, and simple poses and flows (heaven and earth, half crescent moon, cow/cat,
forward fold, gentle back bend, child, and side twists) to warm up and stretch out the six
directional movements of the spine. The third class will introduce the use of props to enhance
some of the poses as well as introduce poses and flows for the head, neck and shoulders. The
fourth and fifth classes will progressively introduce poses for the upper and middle back and the
core (sunbird with variations, boat, plank, bridge, and camel) plus some simple flows (child-
puppy-sphinx/cobra-downdog). The sixth class will focus on the lower back and hips including
the SI joints, piriformis and psoas muscles (cat looking for its tail, reclining deer, reclining
pigeon, reclining butterfly, double knee tucks and knee drop twists). The seventh and eighth
classes will add more standing poses and flows (warrior poses and sequences, folds, expanding
star, exalted mountain, goddess and squats). Classes will be modified based on the needs,
abilities and progress of the class participants.
